Community Garden
PVYCC collaborated with the Garden’s Project to build a community garden. The Garden's Project is coordinated by Miles Gordon, Miles and his staff worked with PVYCC to install drip irrigation, pull weeds, plant seeds, lay mulch, lay weed cloth, till the ground, start seeds and much more! The students in the after school program were on hand to help out also. The garden is 37'x60', it provides food for about 100 people and the fall garden produced about 25-30 lbs a week. The garden is completely organic, no chemicals are used on the plants, all excess produce goes to the school cafeteria and PVYCC community members.
When summer break ended and the students returned to the after school program they were greeted with a bountiful garden full of tomatoes, squash, pan patty squash, peppers, basil, zucchini and flowers. The garden served as a teaching tool in the after school program as well as the Nutrition class in the 5th day program. Mary Esenbock, PVYCC Nutrition Coordinator, uses the garden as a hands on teaching tool, students go into the garden pick produce and then prepare it. The students have a vested interest in the garden, it is because of this we hope to foster healthier eating habits both in school and at home.
This winter Mary is hard at work in the garden preparing the winter seeds and plants the winter garden will have carrots, onions, chard and kale.
